Is A Saint Bernard Right For You?

Saint Bernard dogs can make wonderful companions, but they may not be the perfect breed for everyone. Please consider the following information when deciding if a Saint Bernard would be the perfect addition to your home. Saint Bernards also suffer from some Common Medical Problems due to the breeds size and build.

Saint Bernards are Affectionate and Social Dogs

A Saint becomes very devoted to his family, and companionship is of prime importance to this sociable breed. If left alone too much, the Saint may become dispirited, and possibly destructive. They should not be left outside or in a kennel. Rather, they thrive on being made part of the family.

Saint Bernards Require Obedience Training

A Saint requires basic obedience and household rules in order to be a successful pet. Saints respond very well to postiive enforcement, such as treats or praise. They are large dogs and have an independent streak, so the absence of any training makes them difficult, if not impossible, to handle for many people. If you don't intend to train your Saint or reinforce household rules, you may be better off with a breed that is both small and socially submissive.

Saint Bernards Need to be Groomed Daily

You shouldn't adopt a Saint Bernard just because you are attracted to their appearance. Saints require many hours of grooming, bathing, and brushing to obtain that beautiful coat that you see in a show ring. A Saint owner should expect to spend about 10-15 minutes a day grooming their Saint, not only to preserve the outward appearance but to protect the skin underneath and to detect and remove unwanted invaders like ticks.

Saint Bernards Drool and Shed

Remember that scene from the movie Beethoven where the dog shakes its head and slobber flings all over the walls and anyone unlucky enough to be standing nearby? Well, most Saints aren't that bad, but they do drool. There is no such thing as a "dry mouth" Saint. Saint Bernards drool because of their jaw and mouth structure, which allows them to breath while preforming tasks. If you can't get used to the idea of drool, then a Saint isn't the right breed for you. Saints are also seasonal shedders, and they can produce enough clumps of hair to easily fill a trash bag or vacuum bag. If you aren't happy unless your house is immaculate, then a Saint isn't the right dog for you.

Saint Bernards Must Exercise Daily

Saint Bernards need exercise to maintain the health of their heart, lungs, and muscle. But because of the breed's mellow, laid-back disposition, your Saint will not give himself enough exercise unless you accompany him on walks or play with him daily.

Saint Bernards are Not Cheap

Food for Saint Bernards costs more than for some other breeds, simply because a Saint is a large dog and eats more. Medications may be more than for other breeds because of the dog's large body weight. He will need a bigger car to travel in and a bigger crate to sleep in. If you can't afford to feed, provide medical care, or otherwise take care of a Saint, then this isn't the right breed for you.
